Responsible leadership
- Grow our recreation and health services to continue to attract familes to the area

- Protect our local heritage with a suitable location to house our local treasures
- Be an active participant in stakeholder organizations such as Community Care, Lake Associations and Community Centres
Local priorities
- Expand the dockage in Buckhorn to entice boaters to stay overnight, and therefore bring needed dollars into our tourist market
- Roadside beautification for Buckhorn and the surrounding area
- Economic development with the Economic Development Officer spending time at the Buckhorn tourist building, and at the library in Kinmount
Future-ready planning
- Ongoing collaboration between Trent Lakes and the County of Peterborough to drive efficiencies in public projects and spending
Who is Janet Clarkson?
Buckhorn is my hometown, and I trace my family roots here. However, I did live for eight years in Toronto and the Bay Ridges area of Pickering. It was at that time that I realized the importance of local government and the impact of poor planning. I feel my terms as councillor at large, followed by two terms as Mayor has given me the knowledge to work successfully in the future to advance the needs of this fantastic place we call home.
I have spent most of my life living within the Buckhorn community. Its social and economic welfare is something very important to me. When the Buckhorn school board decided to close the old school and bus our kids to Lakefield, I campaigned
to stop this action. I am pleased to say the effort successfully led to building the new school.
I stayed involved with the new school and ran for council, with the idea to spearhead the creation of a medical centre in Buckhorn. With the strong support of residents and their commitment to raise half the money we were able to fulfill that
dream. I eventually was able to recruit both doctors and a nurse practitioner. Promoting economic development is vital to the community, and the Buckhorn Tourist Association building contributes to this much-needed role. Last year it provided area information to 17 43 visitors to our area.
Several other projects followed, including the Buckhorn Sports Pad. Most of the funds for this structure was raised through the local community. At the same time, we as council remodelled both the Kinmount Medical Centre and Galway Hall. A completely new build of the Lakehurst Hall was undertaken. We also acquired the Sandy Lake beach property which led to the development of the beach front and creation of public parking to serve its many visitors. Following my retirement, I founded a Lions Club which is alive and well and has recently opened a food pantry for all seven days a week 24 hours a day! And of course we can’t forget the Santa Clause parade in November.
All of these are of course, accomplishments of the past. What of the future?
We currently have new fire hall and public works depots that will provide our residents the best possible care. It will attract talent that will bring good paying jobs and in turn create an interest for young families to locate here.
We are a large and diverse population with different wants and needs. I will need to hear from you to know your respective needs. I am always open to hear and discuss your thoughts regarding our community’s improvement and future. We are never too old or too young to learn. Our future is only as bright as we make it.
